Windhoek – Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), Advocate Notemba Tjipueja in the company of ECN Chief Electoral and Referenda officer, Theo Mujoro today (27/10/20) submitted the Commission’s annual report for 2018/19 to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Prof. Peter Katjavivi. The annual report contains the commission’s major activities for the period under review.
Advocate Tjipueja further handed over performance assessment reports for the previously held 2019 regional Council by elections for the Ondangwa urban and Oshakati east constituencies. Reports for other previous elections are to follow.
This is in accordance with the electoral act that requires the submission of an annual report and performance assessment reports for elections to the Speaker for tabling within 14 days. The reports are then handed over to the Head of State.The Speaker, Hon. Prof. Peter Katjavivi on his part pledged to table the report within reasonable time.
During the same meeting, Adv. Notemba revealed that the commission was prepared to hold the upcoming regional and local authority elections due to take place next month. She noted that the commission has already finalized the registration process and that all nominations for candidates have been received. The chairperson further stated that the voters’ education campaign has been intense and ongoing particularly due to the commission’s decision to revert to manual voting. Adv. Tjipueja also revealed that the commission in collaboration with the Ministry of health has developed a COVID 19 mitigation strategy to be able to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on the electoral process.
