The last session of the fifth National Council is set to resume next week Monday, 26 October 2020 until it is adjourned on Thursday, November 5, 2020. The fifth National Council was sworn-in following the November 2015 Regional Council and Local Authority Elections.
The Regional Council and Local Authority Elections are held every five years. The 2020 elections are scheduled to take place on 25 November 2020, after which the elected Regional Councillors will be nominated at their respective Regional Councils to represent their regions as Members of Parliament in the National Council. Regional Councils from all 14 regions nominate three (3) Regional Councillors to the National Council for a period of five years.
Induction of the in-coming Members of the sixth National Council will take place in December this year, with its first sitting expected for early next year, where the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson will be nominated and elected.
At its inception in 2015, the fifth National Council was chaired by Hon. Margareth Mensah-Williams with Hon. Bernard Sibalatani as Vice Chairperson. After the resignation of Mensah-Williams in October 2019, Hon. Sibalatani was elected as Chairperson and is now deputised by Hon. Victoria Kauma.
